Co. Meath, Ireland, 1986
This decorated stone lies in front of the entrance passage to Newgrange chambered cairn in the Boyne valley. Above the entrance is a smaller opening. The rising sun on the winter solstice, shines directly through this, and illuminates a stone at the far end of the passageway.
Not surprisingly, the Neolithic monuments of Newgrange, Dowth and Knowth are a World Heritage Site.
The English name is a crushed phonetic rendering, rather than a translation, of the Irish An Uaimh na Gréine, meaning The Cave of the Sun.
