Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus)
Hertfordshire, England, 1981

This bird was photographed immediately after take off. It had not yet fully raised its legs, and it was flying at about two metres per second - about a third of its normal cruising speed.

At this speed, a blue tit flies almost twice its own length in the time that it takes a typical camera to respond to a signal to trip the shutter and fire the flashguns.
