Green River
Utah, USA, 2005

I love flying, but I don't get to do it very often. I can happily gaze out of the window for hours. Crossing America in an Airbus 321, I was impressed by this splendid canyon, in Utah.

The Green River, a tributary of the Colorado, has carved this labyrinth through sandstone which has been uplifted during the past 15 million years. The process is of course continuing, and eventually, the river will break through the narrow neck of rock at the western end of Bowknot Bend.

To an inhabitant of a small crowded island, it's amazing that the formation in this image is outside the boundary of the Canyonlands National Park, which was probably clearly visible to passengers on the other side of the aeroplane.
