Inverness-shire, Scotland, 1989
My brother Brian and I wanted to eat our lunch, sheltered from the wind blowing near the top of Stob Choire Claurigh, so we used our ice axes to dig a scoop in the snow. For some reason, we kept going, and didn't stop until we had a snow hole with room for two residents, and several visitors.
We still think wistfully of what we might have achieved, if properly equipped with Spear and Jackson No. 5 shovels.
