Barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides)
Inverness-shire, Scotland, 2003

This barnacle is a cold water species, and the shores around Britain and Ireland are at the southern limit of its range.

By closing their shells tightly while the tide is out, barnacles are able to avoid dessication. Higher up the shore, they are less vulnerable to predators such as the dog-whelk.
