Bog Asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum)
Inverness-shire, Scotland, 2004

The scientific name for this plant reflects a traditional belief that sheep which eat it suffer a weakening of the bones, and are likely to break their legs. It's more likely that the sheep are affected by the calcium poor environment in which this plant thrives.

Bog asphodel does however, contain a substance identifed as 3-methoxy-2(5H)-furanone, which may be responsible for damage to sheeps' kidneys.
