Marsh Marigolds (Caltha palustris)
Cheshire, England, 2004

In Shakespeare's day this spring flower was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In his play about a pre-Christian British king, he has a group of musicians sing to awaken Cymbeline's stern daughter.

"And winking Mary-buds begin to ope their Golden eyes
With every thing that pretty is,
my Lady sweet arise:
Arise, arise."

Perhaps wisely, the lady Imogen remained stubbornly asleep.
