Callanish Hornblende
Isle of Lewis, Scotland, 1999

The Neolithic people who built the standing stone complex at Callanish obviously valued the natural patterns and colours in the stones. It wouldn't have been difficult to find and quarry stones with no distinguishing character, yet many of them have quite striking features.

I can see a cow's eye in this hornblende nodule. I wonder what they saw. An aurochs, perhaps?
