In the late summer of 2003, Mars and Earth were a mere sixty million kilometres apart. Mars shone brightly in the Southern sky, and can be seen here burning a twenty minute trail over the Grey Corries.
The last time Mars was this close, we were not the only human species on Earth, as there were still Neandertals living in Europe. I wonder whether there will still be humans in the Solar System, next time Mars and Earth are in such close proximity.
