Caerlaverock Castle with its unusual triangular plan was the inspiration for Ellangowan Castle, created by Walter Scott in his novel Guy Mannering. The castle’s violent history is far more dramatic than fiction, and it changed hands several times during the first war of Scottish independence, with Edward I of England present at the siege in the summer of 1300.
