Red Squirrel 8492

A red squirrel foraging in a mixed woodland a few days after the worst storm, named Storm Arwen, to hit the area for many years. Conifer species fared worse than the hardwoods, with several squirrels’ dreys destroyed. This photograph is a marriage of old and new technology. I used an old wide angle tilt-shift lens on a modern mirrorless camera body, and was able to use a fast shutter speed to freeze the squirrel’s rapid movement by deploying an ISO setting which would have been absurdly impractical only a few years ago. A small amount of forward tilt, combined with a few millimetres of upward shift allowed the squirrel to be framed in close-up, while keeping the trees in the background vertical without convergence. I used a hazel nut collected from a local bush to attract the squirrel. The chaff surrounding the shell can be seen beside the squirrel’s nose. I triggered the camera from a short distance away using a radio transmitter.
